The Parish have joined forces with Trócaire today and will be sending out collection boxes to all Catholic residents asking for spare change to help build a water pump to get clean flowing water to Derrybeg.
The move comes after years of neglect to the little ghetto district leaving the poor residents of Derrybeg without water as all their usual water holes have now dried up.
Local man Anthony ‘Bounce’ Coyle told us:
“We’re now on the same level of disaster as Ethiopia in terms of no clean drinking water. Our few puddles that sustained us year long are now dried out and the situation now is dire.
We call on all Newry residents to please help us get a water pump into the area. You aren’t asking for fancy things like electricity and internet but please, help us get water.”
