Economists have said the Newry tourism business is sorely being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic as the thousands of international tourists have stopped coming.

Newry’s usually bustling and vibrant tourist attractions are now more like deserted buildings.

A spokesman for Newry Commerce told us:

“The usually busy tourist attractions such as the slums and ghetto areas of Derrybeg, Barcroft and Parkhead are like ghost towns now such is the fear of the international tourism market.

Even the open air safaris in which we take tourists around areas of Crossmaglen and Cullyhanna where they can feed the locals have come to a standstill. It really is worrying.”
