The PSNI Historical Investigations team are to look into a serious incident that occurred in the village of Camlough 35 years ago they have said.
They have appealed for witnesses to the incident and have asked for anyone with information to contact them.
PSNI lead investigator Bobby Smyth told Newry Spud:
“On the 20th of January 1982 Damien Lennon stole ‘Sargie’ Byrnes’ motorcycle and crashed it into prominent Sinn Féiner Terry O’Hare’s white Renault 12. Afterwards Lennon quickly went into hiding fearing a kneecapping. We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the event to call us on Crimestoppers anonymously or contact your local PSNI station.”
After some initial investigation Newry Spud has found one witness Paul Toman who asked not to be named and he gave us the ‘inside story’ for 10 Regal and a Mars Bar.
Mr Toman told us:
“They were crazy times back then. I was hanging around the village that day eating a burger when I saw Damien Lennon on ‘Sargie’s’ motorbike giving her 90. He lost control and hit Terry O’Hare’s yoke. We had to hide Lennon in his attic in case they came looking him.”
