There has been widespread anger in Bessbrook after Newry, Mourne & Down Council has passed a motion by Ulster Unionist David Taylor to rename Green Road to Orange Road.
The Unionist Councillor said it would be a positive step forward for the peace process. He told Newry Spud:
“I believe the renaming of the Green Road to Orange Road is a positive step forward in the peace process. We hope the residents of the road will get behind the new name change.”
But we spoke to one resident Philip McGovern who didn’t want to be named and he told us:
“This is an outrageous affront to the people of the Green Road. We will be organising a protest at Council offices and launching a Facebook page to convey our disgust. The Green Road will always be the Green Road.”
