éirígí Newry spokesman Stephen Murney has welcomed moves by local supermarkets Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s for selling British Legion poppy’s in their Newry stores he has said today.
Mr Murney who is seen as a progressive democrat bought a poppy for himself to show how much the city of Newry has moved forward.
We spoke with Mr Murney from the Newry War Memorial at Bank Parade and he told us:
“Let’s all put this 800 year-long misunderstanding behind us and move forward in a spirit of generosity and love. I have commanded all éirígí members to buy and wear a poppy to support the poppy appeal and we hope that next Easter time this will be reciprocated by our British friends.”
