A Newry woman has been called up to play for the men’s Ireland Rugby team it has been announced today.
Newry City Women’s team captain Maria ‘Shithouse’ Reilly was sensationally named in Michael Kearney and Joe Schmidt’s team that tours South Africa next month.
The impressive Reilly has been a Tour de Force in the local women’s game scoring a record breaking 203 tries this season and single-handedly leading the Newry Women’s team to league and cup success.
Newry Spud spoke to Maria today from the gym where she was casually doing 310kg dumbbell curls she told us:
“I’m excited to be the first woman ever called up to the senior men’s team. I am looking forward to going to South Africa and really can’t wait to make history, it’s great.”
We spoke with Maria’s proud husband Titch who was at home in the kitchen doing the dishes and laundry, he told Newry Spud:
“I’m delighted for Maria, she deserves this great opportunity. She’s certainly not out of her league with the men; she wears the trousers in this house anyway…would you like a cup of tea?”
