The new walkway between Newry & Carlingford which sees the two communities linked via the old disused railway line has become a source of controversy we can reveal.
Newry, Mourne & Down District Council never being ones to see a money spinning opportunity go to waste have said they are to put a toll bridge on the pathway that users will have to pay a fee of £6.50 to use.
Sinn Féin’s Charlie Casey told Newry Spud:
“We’ve decided to put this toll bridge in place in order to get much needed funds for our annual Council Christmas party in the Canal Court. Last year we only got a free 4 course meal and 16 drinks each, desperate really.
Plus this is an international crossing from Northern Ireland to Eire so we have a right to make a lock of quid out of it.”
