Kids Forced Out Of Play Parks Due To Non Smoking & Drinking Policy

The children of Newry face being driven out of local parks if a ban on smoking and drinking alcohol is imposed, it has been claimed.

Youngsters regularly congregate in playgrounds across the Newry & Mourne area to share a few bottles of beer and smoke a few fegs.

But Newry Mourne & Down District Council is now threatening to make all of its parks off limits to children who enjoy a smoke and drink. A report prepared for the council confirmed:

“There is evidence of high levels of smoking and drink-related litter within outdoor play areas.”

We spoke with one local kid Peadar O’Hallion a 9 year old from Derrybeg who said:

“We like coming to the park and have a feg or two and a few bottles of beer to wind down after a stressful day at school. This Council are draconian in nature and they are infringing upon my human rights to enjoy a feg and a wee bottle of Bud occasionally. Outrageous.”
