Teenage delinquents are the prime suspects for Newry’s first beheading tragedy it has emerged.

Locals where left in shock this morning when they found the long standing statue of Irish patriot John Mitchel with his head cut off.

The PSNI where called and attended the scene. A police spokeswoman told Newry Spud:

“The perpetrators of this heinous act are being vigorously pursued by the PSNI. We are following a definite line of enquiry and we won’t leave any stone unturned. Mr Mitchel has stood here for many decades and never said a bad word to anyone. We extend our sympathies to his family and friends at this time.”

Meanwhile The Samaritans have opened up a line for those who first attended the scene of the beheading this morning.
