A family in South America have been saved from starvation thanks to a Newry Facebook campaign to get 10,000 Facebook ‘likes’.
The Rodriguez family, who live in San Paulo in Brazil, were left starving and unable to eat after a recent drought. But thanks to Ryan Malone, who set up a Facebook page to help the family, they are now able to eat fresh food and drink clean water.
Malone told Newry Spud:
“I read about the family’s plight on Facebook and I knew that I had to do something to help them. I thought the best possible way was to set up a Facebook page. I set a target of 10,000 ‘likes’ to help them and although it was hard, we have finally got there. We recently sent the 10,000 ‘likes’ to them in a box and they were most grateful. It’s great to have that sense of achievement.”
But that’s not the end of the road for Malone. He’s setting his next target even higher.
“I’m now looking to cure cancer by getting 100,000 likes on my next page. After that, I’ll probably do one to cure poverty and after that, another one to stop child abuse.”
