Arguably the best boxer of all time Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather has spoken about his Newry roots ahead of his much anticipated clash on the 26th August with Irish man Conor ‘Notorious’ McGregor we can reveal.

Mayweather who has a professional record of 49-0 was speaking to Newry Spud via satalite link and he said:


“Not many people know this but my great grandmother was a mill worker in Bessbrook. Her name was Bridget Lynch. She moved to America for a better life and eventually met my great grandfather Jamal Mayweather in 1912. So I claim Irish nationality as much as Conor McGregor.”

Asked if he would return to his Bessbrook roots and visit after the fight he told us:
