The people of Killeavy have bought a life size replica stone statue of Roman Emperor Nero Julius Caesar Germanicus only with the life-like facial image of local ex-Armagh footballer Steven McDonnell we can reveal.
The statue made from granite and exported from Italy took stone masons 7 months to create and cost the local community £80,000 to make.
McDonnell who helped lead Armagh to their first and only All Ireland win in 2002 is somewhat of a demigod in the small rural village of Meigh where heroes are hard to come by.
We spoke with a modest and humble McDonnell today who told Newry Spud:
“Well to be fair I think it’s the least the village could do for me. I have been waiting for a while for my own statue and now that it is here I feel rightly happy about it. Apart from the road out of here I am the best thing to have ever happened to the area.”
