After several years of a deepening economic recession and growing unemployment rates, the travelling community of Bessbrook are being forced to stage small, skinny weddings instead of the traditional Big Fat Gypsy ones.
The Chairman of the Bessbrook Travellers Association addressed the travelling community of Newry in an arranged public event in Bellini’s, saying that the price of scrap was so low and the amount of people needing their pathways badly tarmacked or willing to buy knife or duvets sets has significantly lowered and that “everyone needs to stop hosting traditional Fat Gypsy weddings and try arranging small skinny ones.”
Paddy Ward who represents Bessbrook Travellers told Newry Spud:
“This is truly heart-breaking. Money, jobs and food are one thing, but the crisis has reached unbearable depths and it’s now hitting the core foundation of us Traveling people, our Big Fat Gypsy Weddings are sacred to us as a people.”
