Newry, Mourne & Down Council have passed a motion to erect a new ‘Las Vegas’ style sign to welcome people coming to Newry it has been revealed.
The sign that will be placed on Monaghan Street and which will cost the ratepayer an estimated £478,000 has split opinion in the city.
One resident told Newry Spud:
“This seems to be another waste of money, like thon big screen they put up, I despair sometimes at the thought of the idiots we constantly elect to thon sham.”
But we spoke to Sinn Fein’s Charlie Casey who was just back from rehearsals in London where he is playing Alf Garnet in a stage play version of ‘Till Death Us Do Part’. Charlie Told Newry Spud:
“I think it’s a great initiative that will surely bring thousands of visitors to the city. While I appreciate the peoples upset over the cost we see this as an investment. We already share one massive thing with Las Vegas – Newry and Las Vegas are the only two places in the world you can exchange chips for sex.”
