Newry Sinn Fein Councillor Charlie Casey is lobbying Vince McMahon the CEO of the WWE to bring WrestleMania to Newry it has emerged.

Casey, a lifelong wrestling fan who once fought Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks after both men stepped out of line at a social event in the Newry Foresters in 1987 said it would be great to host the annual wrestling event in Newry.

Casey told Newry Spud:

“I think we deserve to get the premier wrestling event to visit Newry. I have been a keen practitioner of wrestling myself and have been known to throw my weight around at Sinn Fein meetings, once famously I body slammed Conor Murphy for looking at me in the wrong manner.

Then there was the time in the council chamber when I elbowed the DUP’s William Walker and proceeded to jump on him from atop of the desk landing a perfect body splash.”

We contacted WWE at their headquarters in Connecticut and they have indicated that they are thinking of bringing the event to the area.

They released a short statement saying:

“We have received orders from Charlie Casey, not orders, I mean, a request to bring WrestleMania to Newry. We are currently looking at places large enough to hold the usual 80 to 130,000 fans.”
