After the recent passing of Bishop Eamon Casey the Catholic Church in Ireland has asked Newry Councillor Charlie Casey to stand in and become an ‘Honorary Bishop’ we can reveal.
Bishop Casey who was one of the church’s most controversial figures having a child with a parishioner and staying on as a member of the clergy when this came to light passed away today aged 89.
A spokesman for the Catholic Church told Newry Spud:
“The next best thing to a holy man we have with the same surname as Bishop Casey is Sinn Féin Councillor Charlie Casey. We have reached out to him and have asked if he is willing to carry out some ‘light ecumenical’ duties throughout Newry.”
It is thought Councillor Casey has given the matter serious thought but has decided to remain as a Sinn Féin Councillor but has said he will ‘give out Holy Communion’ on Sundays.
