The SDLP’s Chairperson of the Newry, Mourne & Down District Council Mark Murnin has already made his first major decision since taking office – by giving himself the freedom of Newry City.
The award which is the highest honour available is usually for meritorious contributions to the interests of Newry and the people of the area or to world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavours.
Accepting his award that he gave to himself at a packed function in the Canal Court Hotel Councillor Murnin said:
“My fellow citizens of Newry, I am humbled by this award. I’m humbled because it’s an acknowledgment of how hard I’ve worked. It’s an official recognition of my sacrifices, my diligence and my unwavering commitment to be the best that I can be so that others may flourish. Thank you.”
It is thought other members of the council may look into the legalities of Councillor Murnin’s move of awarding himself the freedom of the city in the next coming weeks.
Moreover, literally nobody in the Greater Newry district could actually pick Councillor Murnin out of a line up such is his obscurity in local political circumstances.
