There were joyous scenes in the small Down village of Burren today as news filtered through that 26 year-old Declan Thickhead became the first from the village to complete primary school.
Known traditionally as a small, unwelcoming and generally hideous village Burren is not known for its intellectual inhabitants so when the 26 year-old farmer’s son got through Primary 7 there were scenes of unimaginable joy.
One local man told Newry Spud:
“In all my 73 years as a Burren resident I never thought I’d live to see the day that a man or woman from the village would get through formal primary education. I’m tearing up just talking about it now. We are all very proud and happy.”
