Historians today have revealed that the 16th President of United States, Abraham Lincoln was born in Meigh just outside Newry.
Up until this week historians believed Lincoln was born in the small town of Hodgenville in Kentucky USA. However after painstaking work they have found he is the son of Maggie & Peader Lincoln from the small townland of Meigh, Killeavy and was born on 12th February 1809.
The research has discovered that most of Abraham’s family died of dysentery leaving him orphaned. Thankfully a kindly Nun who was sailing to America took the young child and reared him.
The story about being born in Kentucky was a cleaver rouse to protect the young man from any embarrassment.
Newry, Mourne & Down Council are said to be planning to erect a statue in Meigh village of the former President in recognition of his birthplace.
